What to know first
- CBT-I is commonly recommended as the first treatment option for long-term insomnia.
- A typical program lasts about six to eight weeks.
- It can be delivered in person, by phone, or online by qualified providers.
What treatment includes
CBT-I may combine a consistent sleep schedule, using the bed mainly for sleep, adjusting time in bed, relaxation methods, and work on unhelpful beliefs about sleep. The plan is individualized and often includes a sleep diary.
Some components can temporarily increase tiredness, so professional guidance is important for people with bipolar disorder, seizure disorders, untreated sleep apnea, high fall risk, or jobs where sleepiness creates danger.
Where products fit
Sleep medicines and supplements have different evidence, risks, and intended durations. They do not reproduce the full effect of CBT-I, and some can interact with alcohol, medicines, or health conditions.
If sleep trouble lasts for weeks, affects daytime function, or occurs with snoring, gasping, restless legs, pain, or mood symptoms, ask for a broader assessment rather than assuming insomnia is the only issue.
